The Myth of Normal

I hope you enjoy this video of Gabor Mate talking about the myth of normal.  There is an aspect of spirituality woven into his discussion. My synopsis of what he’s saying, laden heavily also with my interpretation of it, is this:

“There is no idealized “normal” person.  We are on a continuum.  But our society generates pathology.  We place a high value on producing and consuming vast quantities of material items and so if a person isn’t doing that then they’re not valued as much. Spirituality enters in because there is an intelligence to all creation. If we ignore that, then that’s actually what’s not normal.  We don’t function properly [we become sick].  If we ignore spirituality we are ignoring a fundamental part of ourselves. The path to more compassion for the full spectrum of humanity is spirituality. ”
